What Do Alexa's Light Colors Mean?

Quick Links

Your Amazon Echo speaker's ring light can display various colors, each with its own meaning. With so many different light modes, it's easy to get confused about what Alexa is trying to tell you. So, what do each of your Echo's eight light colors mean, and how can you turn them off?

Why is My Alexa Flashing Green?

Your Echo speaker will only ever flash green if you're receiving a call. Calls can be made directly to your speaker from other Echo owners through the Alexa smartphone app.

To stop this from happening, accept or reject the incoming call on the Alexa app.

Why is My Alexa Light Flashing Yellow?

Whenever you receive an Alexa app notification that hasn't yet been read, your Echo speaker will flash yellow until you dismiss it. Alexa notifications include missed calls, texts, Amazon shopping alerts, delivery updates, and so on.

Why is My Alexa Light Red?

When a solid red light is displayed, that means that Alexa is not listening to you. So, if you say her wake word, she will not respond. You can activate this feature using the "line through a circle" button on your speaker, and pressing the same button again to deactivate it.

Why is My Alexa Light Spinning Blue?

If your Echo's ring light is displaying a spinning light and dark blue light, your speaker is starting up after being disconnected from its power source. This light will likely show for 10 or 20 seconds, and will then disappear when Alexa is ready to go. You'll also see the spinning blue light when Alexa is installing a new firmware update, which can take longer than a normal restart.

The spinning blue ring light will also momentarily show a spinning light while Alexa is processing your voice command. If the spinning blue light won't go away, it's possible that Alexa has crashed or stalled mid-update. You can try unplugging the unit, waiting ten seconds, and then plugging it back in to initiate a reset.

If the problem persists, your Alexa might be faulty and require replacing.

Why is My Alexa Light Solid Blue?

Whenever you use your Echo's wake word, the ring light will turn solid dark blue. For the duration of your request, the light will remain solid blue, and will then display a blue ebbing light when Alexa is responding to your request.

Why is My Alexa Light Purple?

Whenever you activate Do Not Disturb mode on your Echo device, a purple light will briefly appear and then disappear. You can activate Do Not Disturb in the Alexa app, or simply ask Alexa to turn the feature on using your voice.

Why is My Alexa Light Flashing Orange?

A flashing orange light indicates that your speaker is in setup mode. You'll see this when you first connect your speaker to your Alexa app, as well as every time you re-register your speaker to your app. Once your speaker is connected to your app, the orange light will disappear.

Why is My Alexa Light Dull or Solid White?

Whenever you change the volume level on your Echo speaker, a gradual white light will appear. It will be solid at full volume, and only partially visible at low volume. This is the case whether you manually change the volume via the speaker buttons or ask Alexa to do so with a voice command.

Take Note of Your Echo's Ring Light

If your Echo speaker's ring light is active, there may be something important that Alexa is trying to tell you. So, keep the above meanings in mind to more easily discern Alexa's communications.
