Matthew Todd Lauer was born on the 30th of December 1957 in New York City. His mother’s name was Marilyn while his father’s name was Jay Robert Lauer. There is no indication that he divorced other siblings and his parents during his youth. Lauer had his college education at Ohio University, where he studied media art. However, he dropped out at the age of 22 (he later returned and finished his studies at the age of 39).
Matt Lauer began his television career as a producer and a reporter at a television station in Huntington, Virginia known as WOWK-TV. From there he worked for other local television stations in far off places like Boston, Philadelphia, Virginia, Rhode Island and New York. This was between 1979 and 1992. Matt Lauer joined NBC News in 1992. He initially worked as a fill-in anchor for the Today Show before being promoted to full-time anchor in January 1994. Lauer continued to work his way up the ranks, and his hard work paid off when he was named co-host of the Today Show in 1997. His time as a co-host spanned twenty years during which he became a TV star.
He has also co-hosted the opening ceremonies of several Olympic Games. However, Lauer fell from his Olympic heights in November 2017 when he was fired from the Today Show. He was fired following allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct by several of his past and present colleagues. Lauer apologized for his actions, but this was not enough to save his work.

Matt Lauer has been married twice. He first married a fellow journalist, Nancy Alspaugh, in 1981. The marriage lasted seven years when they divorced in 1988. The union produced no children.
In 1998, Lauer remarried, this time to Dutch model Annette Roque. They reportedly met on a blind date in July 1997 and became engaged five months later. The couple tied the 3rd of October 1998 in New York. The union produced three children; two sons and a daughter.
